If you have a passion for writing or a desire to set up your own business, you have probably come across the idea of ‘blogging’. But you may be wondering if this is still a viable option to make money in 2021. It’s a great question that many others also want to know. So, let’s start at the beginning.

When Did Blogging Start?

Blogging began in 1994 by a student, called Justin Hall, who documented his thoughts online. Although it wasn’t called ‘blogging’ at that time. Peter Merholz, a web developer at the time, coined the term ‘Blog’ from its original name, ‘Weblog’. Blogging became more popular in the early 2000s, and especially when the Huffington Post was launched in 2005. The site Medium was born in 2012 and this created further awareness about blogging.

Is Blogging Still a Thing?

Yes, blogging is absolutely still a thing. Anyone who wants to set up a blog can. Blogs can be about anything that you desire. If you have a passion for a subject and a desire to connect with others, then blogging is a great way to do that. Also adding a blog to an existing website can be a great way to add credibility and promote your offerings. You don’t need to be an expert in the area you want to blog about, you just need a genuine interest and desire to regularly produce content on that subject.

How Bloggers Make Money

Glassdoor suggests that bloggers in the United States can earn £51,120 a year. Of course, this can vary greatly, and some bloggers and ‘influencers’ can earn much more than this.

Bloggers make money in lots of different ways. Some of the most common ways are affiliate links, display ads and sponsored posts.

Affiliate links are links on your site that go to another company’s website when you recommend a product. You receive a commission for each purchase through your link.

If you have a lot of traffic to your blog, you can monetise by adding display ads to your site. Visitors to your site don’t even need to click on the ads for you to make money. As your traffic grows you can apply to more lucrative ad networks like Mediavine and Adthrive. The more visitors you get, the more money you can make.

Sponsored posts are when you work directly with a brand to promote their products and/or services. You may create a blog post, for example, to review a product with photos to highlight the benefits. Making money on other social media platforms is also an option, like Instagram and Facebook.

How To Get Started

The great thing about blogging as a business idea is that it’s so easy to get started. And cheap. All you need is a domain name that you can buy from places like Namecheap and a hosting account from somewhere like Bluehost or Siteground.

You will need to install WordPress on your site and add a theme. There are tons of free themes if you want to keep costs as low as possible when you are starting out. But if you want to have more of a customisable theme then you will need to purchase a premium theme.

Once you have the bones of the site set up you can start the fun bit: making it look pretty with your brand colours and logo. And then of course you need to fill your blog with plenty of content (blogs) to drive visitors to your site.

Keep Going

It can all seem a little bit daunting at first trying to learn everything that you need to set up your blog. But take things one step at a time. There are lots of easy-to-follow tutorials on YouTube to guide you through the technical aspects if you get stuck.

The key to blogging is to be consistent and to keep adding content to your blog on a regular basis.
